Understanding Solar Power & PM Surya Ghar Subsidy

Installing a rooftop solar system is one of the most effective ways to lower household utility costs while adopting clean energy. Under the central government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, residential homeowners can access direct financial support to lower installation expenses.

How Much Money Will You Save?

Installing a rooftop solar system reduces monthly electricity expenditures by 80% to 90%:

  • Average Monthly Reduction: If your current electricity bill ranges between ₹3,000 and ₹4,000, solar power will lower it to roughly ₹300 to ₹400, saving you ₹2,700 to ₹3,600 every month.
  • Annual Savings: This translates to ₹32,400 to ₹43,200 saved each year, allowing the system to pay for itself over time.

How Much Electricity Does Solar Generate?

Power generation depends on system capacity (measured in kilowatts/kW):

  • Generation Rate: Every 1 kW of rooftop solar panels generates approximately 100 to 120 units (kWh) of electricity per month under standard sunlight conditions.
  • Matching Generation to Household Needs:
    • 1 kW System: Generates ~100–120 units/month.
    • 2 kW System: Generates ~200–240 units/month.
    • 3 kW System: Generates ~300–360 units/month.

PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Breakdown & Process

The central government provides direct financial assistance ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹78,000 for residential rooftop installations:

System Capacity (kW)

Subsidy Amount (₹)

Ideal For

1 kW

₹30,000

Small homes (Bills up to ₹1,000/month)

2 kW

₹60,000

2–3 BHK homes (Bills ₹1,500–₹2,500/month)

3 kW and above

₹78,000 (Maximum Cap)

3–4 BHK homes (Bills ₹3,000–₹4,500/month)

How the Subsidy Claim Works:

  1. System Installation & Inspection: Once your rooftop solar system is installed, your local electricity distribution company (DISCOM) inspects the setup and installs a bidirectional net meter.
  2. Direct Transfer: Following successful commissioning and report submission, the subsidy is credited directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
